When dealing with such complex works as The Lord of the Rings and its affiliated books, written by J.R.R. Tolkien and in some cases edited by his son Christopher, one becomes saturated by the vast variety of characters and races represented. However, one must keep in mind that all the races can be broken down further than a general classification. An excellent example of this is Elves, the Eldar, Firstborn Children of Iluvatar.
Although all Elves are indeed the Firstborn Children, they can first be divided into two classes: the Calaquendi, the Elves of Light, the High-elves, those Elves who heeded the westward summons and dwelt in Valinor, land of the Gods, during the time of the Two Trees; and the Moriquendi, Elves of the Darkness, who remained in Middle Earth and never saw the Light that was before the Moon and Sun, for they were the lovers of stars and the twilight.
